If you’ve ever been in Key West during late October, you already know — Fantasy Fest isn’t just a party, it’s a way of life. For ten straight days, the island transforms into a colorful, wild, anything-goes celebration of creativity, freedom, and community.
As a local, I can tell you: Fantasy Fest is pure Key West energy. It’s loud, it’s fun, it’s unpredictable… and it’s one of the most unforgettable experiences you’ll ever have down here.
What Is Fantasy Fest?
Fantasy Fest started in 1979 to bring some excitement (and business) to the quiet season. What began as a small, funky parade has grown into a full-blown island carnival that draws tens of thousands of people from all over the world.
From glow-in-the-dark parades to painted bodies, themed parties, and wild costumes, the whole island becomes a stage — and everyone’s invited to play.
Popular Fantasy Fest Events
Each year has a different theme, and events shift around a bit, but here are some of the highlights you can usually count on:
- Goombay Festival – A family-friendly street party in Bahama Village with Caribbean food, live music, and good island vibes.
- Royal Coronation Ball – Where the Fantasy Fest King & Queen are crowned (and it’s a fundraiser for AH Monroe).
- Zombie Bike Ride – One of my personal favorites. Thousands of zombies ride down US1 into Key West, and yes — the outfits are insane.
- Pet Masquerade – For folks who love putting their dogs, cats (or chickens) in costume.
- Headdress Ball – A Key West classic, full of over-the-top fashion, drag, and sparkle.
- Masquerade March – Picture hundreds of locals and visitors parading through Old Town in costume, stopping at houses handing out drinks.
- Fantasy Fest Parade – The grand finale with massive floats, dancers, lights, music, and the kind of spectacle only Key West can pull off.
What to Know Before You Go
- Costumes Are Everything
Whether you’re covered in glitter, feathers, body paint, or leather, dressing up is part of the fun. Even if it’s just a funky hat or neon glasses, come ready to participate. - It’s Not All X-Rated — But It Can Be
Some events are totally family-friendly (like Goombay and the Pet Parade). Others… not so much. After dark, especially on Duval Street, things tend to get more risqué. If that’s not your scene, just check the event descriptions ahead of time. - Plan Ahead
Hotels, vacation rentals, and even scooters book out quickly. Parking is tough during Fantasy Fest, so lock in your accommodations early and expect crowds. - Stay Hydrated & Pack Light
October in Key West can still be hot and humid. If you’re wearing body paint or heavy gear, drink lots of water and bring comfy shoes — you’ll be walking a lot. - Respect the Locals
Key West is a small island with a strong sense of community. Enjoy yourself, but remember: people live here year-round. Be kind, tip well, and clean up after yourself.
Final Thoughts
Fantasy Fest is like nothing else — it’s part art show, part street theater, part costume party, and all about embracing the island spirit. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, every year is a little different, but the feeling is always the same: fun, freedom, and letting go.
So if you’re thinking about coming down, do it. Let go of your expectations, bring your weirdest outfit, and just enjoy the ride.
