Islamorada runs across six islands strung together by bridges. The mistake most visitors make is treating it as one town instead of what it is — a string of neighborhoods, each with its own personality. Work it that way and it opens up.

Robbie's of Islamorada at Mile Marker 77.5 is the signature stop, mostly for the tarpon feeding dock, where a few bucks of herring gets you hand-feeding 100-pound tarpon that boil the water at your feet. Show up before nine or so to beat the tour buses.

Diving and snorkeling: the reefs out here — Cheeca Rocks, Alligator Reef — routinely beat the Key West day-trip sites because the boat run is shorter and the water clarity holds up. Do the reef and the tarpon dock in the same morning.

Where to eat: Midway Cafe (around MM 80.5) is a family-run breakfast-and-lunch spot — everything baked on-site, coffee bar humming, no tourist veneer. For the evening, Lorelei on the bayside runs live music nightly and puts the sunset right in front of you.
