Key Largo is the first and longest of the Florida Keys — about 30 miles of island running south off the mainland. It's the closest key to Miami, which makes it the day-tripper's default, and it's genuinely worth the stop once you know where to point yourself.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the reason this town is on the map. It's the first undersea park in the country — roughly 70 square nautical miles of protected reef and mangrove. The park runs its own glass-bottom boat tours and snorkel trips, and they're excellent, well-narrated, and cheaper than the private operators. Book the park boat and save the splurge for something else.

The African Queen — the actual boat from the 1951 Bogart film — is docked at the Key Largo marina and runs short canal-and-bay cruises. If you're a film buff or traveling with kids, it's a genuinely charming half-hour.

The Christ of the Deep statue is the signature dive — a bronze figure standing in about 25 feet of water off Key Largo since 1965, arms up toward the surface. Even snorkelers can float above it on a calm day.
