Key Largo — The First and Longest Key, the Original Dive Destination

Key Largo Is the Gateway to the Keys. Do It Right and the Rest Falls Into Place.

Key Largo is the first and longest of the Florida Keys — 30 miles of island running south from the mainland. It's also the most accessible from Miami, which makes it the most-visited key for day-trippers. It's also genuinely excellent, once you know where to look.

John Pennekamp State Park is the reason Key Largo exists as a tourist destination. It's the first undersea park in the US — 70 square nautical miles of protected reef and mangrove ecosystem. The park runs its own glass-bottom boat tours and snorkel trips. They're consistently excellent, educational, and significantly less expensive than the private operators.

The African Queen — the actual boat from the 1951 Humphrey Bogart film — is docked at the Key Largo Marina and runs twice-daily tours. If you're a film buff or have kids, it's a worthwhile stop.

The Christ of the Deep statue at 38 feet is the signature dive site — a 28-foot bronze figure that's been underwater since 1973.
