Marathon Is the Middle of the Keys. That Makes It the Smartest Base.

Marathon is a 10-mile stretch of islands right in the Middle Keys — about an hour south of Key Largo, an hour north of Key West. Most people floor it straight through on the way to Key West. Stop instead: Marathon has the best mix of access, value, and real local character in the whole chain.

Sombrero Beach is the signature stop — a City of Marathon park with a long ribbon of white sand on the ocean side, free parking, real facilities, and space to breathe even on a busy weekend. Roll in near sunset for the light coming off the Seven Mile Bridge approach.

Tarpon fishing runs February through June, and the Middle Keys are ground zero. If you're chasing a tarpon on the fly, Marathon is the base you want.

The Stuffed Pig, on Overseas Hwy, is the breakfast institution around here — a tiny, cash-only spot with a line out front most mornings. Get there early, and note it's closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan your breakfast run around that.
