Jet ski rental is one of the most straightforward activities in Key West — you show up, watch a safety video, sign a waiver, get briefed, and go. The variation between operators is mostly about location, fleet condition, and whether you want to follow a guide or go it alone. There's no complex gear, no expertise required, and no scheduling drama.
The one thing that surprises people: what the waiver actually covers. Read it before you sign, and know the difference between your security deposit and a damage waiver.
Rental Options
You get a jet ski and a marked zone. 30-minute and 1-hour options. Most operators run out of the Key West Bight Marina or the Safe Harbor at Garrison Bight. You can go wherever within the rental zone. Best for experienced riders who want to explore at their own pace. Safety briefing is required on first rental.
A guide leads you through scenic channels, past Sandpoint, and around the harbor islands. Usually 45–60 minutes. Safer for beginners (you follow in single file), and you get a local's route rather than just exploring blindly. Most tours stop at a scenic spot for photos. Good for couples and small groups who want an experience rather than just a rental.
Book a fleet of jet skis for a bachelor party, corporate event, or family reunion. Our marina concierge can coordinate the rental, a catering boat, and a guide route for groups of 6–20. Pricing is custom based on group size and duration.
- Security deposit ($200–$500): Held on your card at checkout. Return the jet ski undamaged and in one piece — you get it back within 3–5 business days. Minor cosmetic damage (scratches, small dents) is covered by the deposit. Major damage goes to the damage waiver.
- Damage waiver ($20–$40/day): Optional but strongly recommended. Covers you for accidental damage to the jet ski. Without it, you're liable for repair costs up to the replacement value of the ski (~$8,000–$12,000). Pay the $20. It's not worth the risk.
- Personal injury: The waiver releases the operator from liability for your injuries. Your health insurance or travel insurance is your fallback here. If you're visiting from overseas, check that your travel policy covers water sport injuries.
- Collision with other vessels: This is the real risk in Key West harbor. If you hit another jet ski or a boat, you're liable for damages to the other vessel. The damage waiver covers damage to your ski — not the one you hit. Ride responsibly in the rental zone and follow the briefing.
